Name: Stéphane Kisaka

What year did you graduate from CIBU, and what degree or certificate did you earn?

I graduated last year in 2012 from the Bachelor Degree program in International Management at CIBU.

What country are you from, and where are you now?

I am from France, and right now, I am pursuing an MBA in international management in Lille, France and I will finish it between Paris and New York next year.
The goal is to get a double degree from my French university ISEG Business School in partnership with the St’Johns University of Manhattan, New York.

Tell us about your professional life.   Are you working? Interning? Starting your own business? Furthering your education? Traveling?   We’re eager to hear the details!  Share a link if you’d like.

Concerning my professional life, after receiving my Bachelor Degree at CIBU, I did an internship as a stock broker at BNY Mellon, (Bank Of New York Mellon) a bank specialized in asset management where I had to process transactions in a high pressure and deadline driven environment. I really thank CIBU to having brought me the different tools such as (Corporate Finance or Business Communications to have been able to find this internship)

Tell us about your personal life.   How did your experience abroad help you grow as a person?

About my personal life, I think that my experience abroad helped me a lot to grow as a person, it brought me all the keys to become a real entrepreneur as I plan to create my own company in the future specialized in communication. Moreover, this experience in San Diego also helped me with my relationships with foreigners as I was living with other international students mainly from Brazil, Saoudi Arabia, and the USA with who I am still in contact and speaking to almost every day.

It showed me that I would like to work abroad in an international environment with people from all over the world and also try to share my experience with them. This experience was even better than my previous years studing in France.

How do you think your studies at CIBU have helped you achieve your overall goals?

I think that my studies at CIBU helped me to achieve my overall goals, it helped me to realize a part of my dream which was first to study in the USA, and brought me all the elements to be able to make  my dreams come to true, aligning with my future projects such as being a global leader via an international degree and international global skills. That’s also why I love sharing my experiences with other students today.

Since my experience in San Diego, I am definitely sure that I will work abroad; it’s also the reason why I plan to go back to San Diego this summer. My studies at CIBU also have shown me the importance of learning languages when you are travelling or working abroad, indeed, I recognized that it’s also the key to improve your relationship with people.

CIBU brought me all the key elements for success and I recommend this experience to each student who would like to work abroad like me.

Any insight, wisdom, or recommendations you’d like to share  for future students?

I suggest to the future students that they believe in their dreams and try to do everything to make them true, this experience at CIBU in San Diego will bring you all the elements to shape your different projects.

Originally from Tahiti, Stephanie Burcegol graduated from CIBU’s Masters of Business program in 2009.  Wanting to stay in the US, she moved to Provo, Utah soon after graduation and began working in a company of over 4,000 employees.  Due to company restructuring, Stephanie began the search for new opportunities.  She wanted to remain in the States, but didn’t have an outlet to do so.  After researching the situation, Stephanie was afforded an opportunity to open a café in the Little Italy neighborhood of San Diego in 2011.

Breakfast at Stephanie’s (www.breakfastatstephanies.net), located at 1501 India Street, was no cakewalk to open.  She was, however, fortunate to have the previous owner advise and counsel her about the various permits needed because, in her words, she “had no idea how to run a restaurant.”  Stephanie also had difficulties elsewhere with health code authorizations and the overwhelming responsibility of hiring employees.  Considering the excess of permits and approvals one must obtain to establish a restaurant, Stephanie’s belief that “the first year is hell” seems to be trustworthy. In summary of this difficult time, Stephanie contends “when you are a woman, young, and a foreigner, no one takes you seriously.”  After battling through this stereotype, Stephanie now finds herself in January of 2013 as having a successful business.

Stephanie applied the education she obtained through CIBU’s master of business program to her café.  While attending CIBU, Stephanie learned about different ways to market her business.  To date, Stephanie has implemented a company website, hires people to pass out coupons, and also advertises on dealcurrent.com.

Though it sounds easy, for her café to be successful, Stephanie believes that “just by being open [in accordance with the café’s hours] and knowing your customers” are important keys.   As well, flexibility is a personal quality that Stephanie possesses to increase success.  Here, Stephanie maintains that flexibility is important because “as the owner you have to be able to change your plans; often and quickly.”  When asked of her expectations for the future of her café, Stephanie would like to open another location eventually.    Lastly, when I asked Stephanie what advice she could share with future entrepreneurs, she offered some advice that putting in 110%, continued flexibility, and never giving up are most important for future entrepreneurs.

Yoon Jeong Amelia Kim comes from a well-educated family in Seoul, South Korea (Republic of Korea).  Seoul is the capital of South Korea and is known for its combination of history and modern culture.

After seeing a posting on her university website for “Business Communications” at California International Business University in San Diego California, Yoon Jeong decided to strengthen her “Global Eyes.”

Right away, Yoon Jeong knew that she had made the right decision.  Once she started classes at CIBU she felt comfortable.  Yoon Jeong liked that the instructors she had were passionate and helped students with personalized instruction.  For example, she got helpful advice from her instructor when working on a resume development assignment.  Weeks later, she used the resume to find in internship at a successful employer in San Diego.

The Business Communication course also helped Yoon Jeong with her cultural transition, “If I would not have taken the course, I would not have been able to adapt well.”  More specifically, she credits CIBU with helping her interact with Americans.  Furthermore, Yoon Jeong is living with American roommates whom she gets along with well.

Although Yoon Jeong continues to work in event planning in San Diego she plans on leveraging her education into a once in a lifetime opportunity; her dream is to be an event manager in the 2018 Winter Olympics in  Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Yoon Jeong’s advice for students in the College of Life-Long Learning: “Mingle with the San Diego Community, meet people.”

“California International Business University is absolutely a stepping stone,” she said, “providing a solid set of tools to use in the future.”

Vanessa is one of CIBU’s TESOL students from Nantou, Taiwan, her major is Applied English at National Chin-Yi University. One of Vanessa’s many accomplishments and skills is her success with her musical abilities. She started playing a few years ago when she started going to college and found people to play music with. Some of her main influences are Taylor Swift, Avril Lavigne, and Beyonce. She has performed in public many times including a performance for CIBU students at this year’s summer welcome party and she also made it through three stages of Super Idol,  the Taiwanese version of American Idol. Vanessa wanted to see what the judges though of her vocal and guitar skills to see how far she had progressed with her skills.

Vanessa has been exploring San Diego and taking in all of its many offerings in the last month. She really enjoys being outside in the fresh air as she commented some of her favorite places in southern California so far are Coronado Island, Disney Land, and Balboa park. As far as new cuisine she has tried in San Diego Vanessa really enjoys Mexican, American, and Italian food. One thing Vanessa has done to become more familiar with American culture and improve her English is watching movies and TV shows trying to imitate the accents. Vanessa hopes to teach in other countries after she finishes up her TESOL certificate program. To read more about Vanessa and the things she likes about CIBU keep reading.

Here are a few songs performed by Vanessa at the CIBU Summer Welcome Party:

What do you like most about San Diego?
Beautiful nature is well presented here. I breathe in fresh air every single day. In addition, I’ve tasted a lot of food here, including Mexican, Italian, and American food. It’s really amazing that I can experience three cultures at the same time.

What are your hobbies?
I love playing music instruments (guitar, piano), singing, and write songs. I also enjoy reading novels.

How did you hear about CIBU?
The first I heard about CIBU was from the information that the Office of International Affairs of my college offered.
What do you want to do when you are done with school?
I’ll return to college in Taiwan and finish my senior year. And I might begin the preparation of applying a graduate school.

San Diego Is The Best Place To Launch A Startup In 2014

$

I always knew that San Diego is an awesome place to live, study and network. But the best city to start a business? Many people that think about starting a business think of California, more precisely: Silicon Valley. But San Diego? Please see what made us the best place to launch a startup in 2014 according to Tom Post from Forbes Magazine:

The Radius database analyzes billions of data points about businesses in the U.S. each day, and from those data we can deduce unique insights about the communities that are most advantageous to small business owners. Based on our analysis of over 27 million U.S. businesses, we believe the next generation of small business owners will flock to cities not because of growing job rates and income levels, but because of community engagement and access to resources.

Small enterprises ranked in the top five on nearly every category to lift San Diego into the top slot. There is heavy concentration in projected high growth industries, as well as a high likelihood of accepting credit cards and adopting social media. San Diego is home to the fifth-best rated business community in the country.

We evaluated the 50 most populous cities in the U.S. on a number of criteria we have found to evince community engagement and availability of resources to small businesses:

Thanks to the convergence of economic conditions and consumer trends, we are on the verge of revitalized small business communities across the country. To determine which U.S. cities are the most welcoming to small business owners who want to put down roots this year, we have developed a unique set of criteria based on data available within Radius.

To generate this list, we evaluated the 50most populous cities in the U.S. on a number of criteria we have found to evince community engagement and availability of relevant resources:

1. Small businesses as a percentage of total businesses. Cities that boast the highest relative concentration are more likely to offer access to resources that benefit small businesses than those that don’t.

2. Percentage of small businesses that accept credit cards. Such businesses are more likely to stay abreast of new technology—and more likely to earn higher revenues. A 2012 GoPayment survey estimated that small businesses that don’t accept plastic miss out on $100 billion in sales annually; those that do accept credit cards are likely to process more transactions and close more sales than those that do not.

3. Percentage of small businesses in high growth industries. The national economies with the highest median family incomes correlate closely with the nation’s fastest growing industries. Industry growth can predict housing, income, and population booms, and where cities grow, their businesses reap the benefits—a benefit even to startups in businesses outside the key industries. We awarded special weight to cities with high concentrations of businesses in computer software and services as it’s the second most trusted institution–just behind small businesses–according to Pew Research, has grown consistently over a number years, and has been linked to overall community job growth. (According to Sageworks, those fastest growing industries of privately held companies are: support activities for mining; oilseed and grain farming; beverage manufacturing; agriculture, construction and mining machinery manufacturing; other crop farming; computer systems design and related services; offices of real estate agents and brokers; chemical and allied products merchant wholesalers/distributors; personal and household goods repair and maintenance; and employment services.)

4. Percentage of small businesses with Facebook pages and websites. It turns out that Internet-savvy businesses are likely to grow faster than those that don’t, and are also more likely to advertise online. Radius research also found that small businesses that stay active online receive more favorable feedback from customers. Web presence indicates adaptability and likelihood to innovate—creating a network effect for communities dedicated to growth and positive change.

Based on these criteria, here are our rankings of the best places to launch a new business this year:.

1. San Diego

2. Denver

3. Austin, TX

4. Seattle

5. Portland, OR

6. San Francisco

7. Dallas, TX

8. Boston

9. New York City

10. Chicago

11. Las Vegas

12. San Jose, CA

Well, besides my family and friends, I really miss the German food, the Autobahn and European soccer, or as we call it football.

What do you like most about CIBU?

I really enjoyed the experience of working closely with the instructors at CIBU. I was able to independently apply the theories from case studies we reviewed and practice giving presentations. I really felt like the professors cared about students and took their time to give detailed feedback about the work we did.

What’s your favorite food, musician, and actor?

My favorite food I really love Mediterranean, Asian and typical German food, and after one year in San Diego I will definitely minimize my fast food consumption in the future.

Musicians: Justice, The Bloody Beetroots, Röyksopp, Steve Aoki, Jay Z, Drake, etc.

Actors: Robert Downey Jr., John Travolta, Christian Bale.

Celebrates 20 Years: Initiates “20/20 Vision Plan”

SAN DIEGO, (July 04, 2014) – National media have recently focused on San Diego, Forbes ranked our city ‘best in the nation to start a new business,’ and, San Diego has also been rated one of the best places for Millennials to live. With San Diego’s increasingly diversified business base and global trade focus, it is essential for our business, educational and governmental communities and institutions to build a support base to capitalize on these opportunities to sustain economic growth.

Founded in 1995, the California International Business University (CIBU) is focusing growth and development of lead staff, professors, curricula and student recruitment to support San Diego’s global business ecosystem. CIBU offers undergraduate, graduate and DBA programs to students from the United States and currently 16 other countries. The University focuses on business, management, marketing, finance and entrepreneurship, blending theory-based curricula with practical industry experiences, inspiring academic outreach and engaging in-class lectures.

Leading the “20/20 Vision Plan” at CIBU

New leadership and global investment are enabling the institution to expand domestic and global capstone programs in entrepreneurship, global trade and hospitality.  Returning to CIBU as Academic Dean is Dr. William Howe. Dr. Howe has 27 years experience as a professor and administrator. Other positions have included Director of the LEAD Center at UCSD, Director of the Center for Leadership at National University and professor of Leadership Studies at the University of San Diego and the University of Richmond, VA. The 20 / 20 Vision Plan at CIBU is founded upon collaboration, transparency, shared decision making and accessibility among all stakeholders in the institution from staff and professors to students and alumni. As CIBU prepares its students for global leadership, it will focus on a combination of theory/research, education/development, practice/application and dispersed/shared leadership.
