Name: Stéphane Kisaka

What year did you graduate from CIBU, and what degree or certificate did you earn?

I graduated last year in 2012 from the Bachelor Degree program in International Management at CIBU.

What country are you from, and where are you now?

I am from France, and right now, I am pursuing an MBA in international management in Lille, France and I will finish it between Paris and New York next year.
The goal is to get a double degree from my French university ISEG Business School in partnership with the St’Johns University of Manhattan, New York.

Tell us about your professional life.   Are you working? Interning? Starting your own business? Furthering your education? Traveling?   We’re eager to hear the details!  Share a link if you’d like.

Concerning my professional life, after receiving my Bachelor Degree at CIBU, I did an internship as a stock broker at BNY Mellon, (Bank Of New York Mellon) a bank specialized in asset management where I had to process transactions in a high pressure and deadline driven environment. I really thank CIBU to having brought me the different tools such as (Corporate Finance or Business Communications to have been able to find this internship)

Tell us about your personal life.   How did your experience abroad help you grow as a person?

About my personal life, I think that my experience abroad helped me a lot to grow as a person, it brought me all the keys to become a real entrepreneur as I plan to create my own company in the future specialized in communication. Moreover, this experience in San Diego also helped me with my relationships with foreigners as I was living with other international students mainly from Brazil, Saoudi Arabia, and the USA with who I am still in contact and speaking to almost every day.

It showed me that I would like to work abroad in an international environment with people from all over the world and also try to share my experience with them. This experience was even better than my previous years studing in France.

How do you think your studies at CIBU have helped you achieve your overall goals?

I think that my studies at CIBU helped me to achieve my overall goals, it helped me to realize a part of my dream which was first to study in the USA, and brought me all the elements to be able to make  my dreams come to true, aligning with my future projects such as being a global leader via an international degree and international global skills. That’s also why I love sharing my experiences with other students today.

Since my experience in San Diego, I am definitely sure that I will work abroad; it’s also the reason why I plan to go back to San Diego this summer. My studies at CIBU also have shown me the importance of learning languages when you are travelling or working abroad, indeed, I recognized that it’s also the key to improve your relationship with people.

CIBU brought me all the key elements for success and I recommend this experience to each student who would like to work abroad like me.

Any insight, wisdom, or recommendations you’d like to share  for future students?

I suggest to the future students that they believe in their dreams and try to do everything to make them true, this experience at CIBU in San Diego will bring you all the elements to shape your different projects.

While our vision is global, our focus is local.  Our students are NUMBER ONE. One of the many reasons I am proud to be part of the CIBU community is because of its long-standing commitment to diversity and especially cultural diversity.  I strongly believe that we can learn some of life’s most important lessons from each other.  The more varied the perspectives represented, the richer our education.  Our difference, whether they be the academic questions that engage us, age, economic background, gender, race, culture, to just name a few, bring an enthusiasm to our university community and help create the intellectual vitality that makes CIBU a great place to study.  We allow you to discover your potential and develop your inspiration to be an effective business leader.

CIBU’s academic and certificate programs will challenge you.  But, its rewards will lead you to a successful transition into the business world or graduate studies. CIBU has been providing top notch education for sometime now, so we’re spotlighting one alumni per month showing where they are now and how CIBU helped them get there.

Originally from Tahiti, Stephanie Burcegol graduated from CIBU’s Masters of Business program in 2009.  Wanting to stay in the US, she moved to Provo, Utah soon after graduation and began working in a company of over 4,000 employees.  Due to company restructuring, Stephanie began the search for new opportunities.  She wanted to remain in the States, but didn’t have an outlet to do so.  After researching the situation, Stephanie was afforded an opportunity to open a café in the Little Italy neighborhood of San Diego in 2011.

Breakfast at Stephanie’s (www.breakfastatstephanies.net), located at 1501 India Street, was no cakewalk to open.  She was, however, fortunate to have the previous owner advise and counsel her about the various permits needed because, in her words, she “had no idea how to run a restaurant.”  Stephanie also had difficulties elsewhere with health code authorizations and the overwhelming responsibility of hiring employees.  Considering the excess of permits and approvals one must obtain to establish a restaurant, Stephanie’s belief that “the first year is hell” seems to be trustworthy. In summary of this difficult time, Stephanie contends “when you are a woman, young, and a foreigner, no one takes you seriously.”  After battling through this stereotype, Stephanie now finds herself in January of 2013 as having a successful business.

Stephanie applied the education she obtained through CIBU’s master of business program to her café.  While attending CIBU, Stephanie learned about different ways to market her business.  To date, Stephanie has implemented a company website, hires people to pass out coupons, and also advertises on dealcurrent.com.

Though it sounds easy, for her café to be successful, Stephanie believes that “just by being open [in accordance with the café’s hours] and knowing your customers” are important keys.   As well, flexibility is a personal quality that Stephanie possesses to increase success.  Here, Stephanie maintains that flexibility is important because “as the owner you have to be able to change your plans; often and quickly.”  When asked of her expectations for the future of her café, Stephanie would like to open another location eventually.    Lastly, when I asked Stephanie what advice she could share with future entrepreneurs, she offered some advice that putting in 110%, continued flexibility, and never giving up are most important for future entrepreneurs.

CIBU strives to be an excellent model of the smaller, focused universities in the world, and is one of America’s only internationally chartered schools with a predominantly international student body.

CIBU has welcomed over 3000 students from over 85 countries. The School has hosted satellite degree program centers in Asia and Europe, and has conducted extensive training and corporate education programs with international corporations. In addition, the School is committed to fostering long term relationships with select companies which are able to welcome student research projects, expose students to executives and actual emerging growth challenges. Such cases and companies exemplify and represent the highest standards of industry leadership, creativity, and educational-cultural exchange.

We have named such cases “Master Cases” and the companies that participate “Master Case Sponsors”. Ms. Tadgell-Foster from London speaks to Global Broadcast, Print & Social Media Marketing class

On Thursday, August 1, students in CIBU’s Global Broadcast, Print, and Social Media Marketing class were treated to an extremely timely and thought-provoking speech by guest speaker and UK expert on Privacy, Lesley Tadgell-Foster. Ms.Tadgell-Foster is Managing Director at Shelfline Promotional Consultancy LTD and is also a Lead Professor at both Regents College London and Bournemouth University.

Ms.Tadgell-Foster shared with us some of the largest data breaches in the past few years. In one of the largest data losses in UK history, HM Revenue & Customs lost 2 CD’s containing child benefit records for 25 million people, including the bank records for 7.25 million families. In 2011, Sony lost 100 million names which cost them millions, not to mention their reputation. She shared T-Mobile’s call center employee data theft, in which employees sold millions of customer records to data brokers. All of these stories have led wary consumers to ask the all important question: Can I trust you with my data?

With newspaper headlines such as “Every click you make, every call you take, they’ll be watching you” and the founder of Facebook proclaiming that Privacy is dead, Ms.Tadgell-Foster agrees that privacy is dead and that people’s confidence in data has tanked. She also believes that we may see some consumer backlash in response to big data. Her engaging speech left us thinking about our daily online/mobile data activities and interactions and their impact on our privacy.

Our goal is to learn English and about American culture, it’s the best way experience it.

Vanessa hopes to teach in other countries after she finishes up her TESOL certificate program. To read more about Vanessa and the things she likes about CIBU keep reading.

Some more questions Q & A from Vanessa:

Where are you from?
I’m from Nantou, Taiwan. I’ve stayed here for a month so far.

What do you like most about San Diego?
Beautiful nature is well presented here. I breathe in fresh air every single day. In addition, I’ve tasted a lot of food here, including Mexican, Italian, and American food. It’s really amazing that I can experience three cultures at the same time.

What are your hobbies?
I love playing music instruments (guitar, piano), singing, and write songs. I also enjoy reading novels.

What degree are you working on and what is your major?
I’m actually working on the TESOL Program. The most I need is experience from practicum which CIBU provides me a lot. My major in Taiwan, National Chin-Yi University, is Applied English.

How did you hear about CIBU?
The first I heard about CIBU was from the information that the Office of International Affairs of my college offered.
What do you want to do when you are done with school?
I’ll return to college in Taiwan and finish my senior year. And I might begin the preparation of applying a graduate school.

What do you miss most about home?
Although the life I spend here is pretty good and I fit quite well, I do miss my friends and family. Especially during summer vacation, all of my old friends are hanging out but I can’t.

What do you like most about CIBU?
CIBU is almost like a big family that people are getting along with one another. The professors not only teach us the knowledge from textbooks, but let us learn from practicum. On the other hand, we’re able to meet with international students and get a chance to exchange cultures and life experience.

What’s your favorite food, musician, and actor?

My favorite food: Dessert is my favorite. Besides, I love some of the Taiwanese dishes, but in fact, I enjoy exotic food a lot. Macaroni and Mexican food are ones of my favorite.

Musicians: I love all kinds of music. (ex. Avril Lavigne, Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Black Eye Peas, Paramore…)

Actors: Kiera Kightly, Johnny Depp, Alex Pettyfer, Amanda Seyfried

Dear CIBU faculty, staff, and students,

On behalf of myself and CIBU Academic Dean, Dr. Tem Bugarin, I wish to offer my heartfelt congratulations on an excellent end to fall quarter 2013.

As the days grow shorter and cooler, and all Americans prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving Day, I would like to pause and thank each one of you for making this such a great quarter.

Thank you to our dedicated CIBU faculty for all of your diligent attention to the task of exceeding the academic standards of our nationally accredited university. Every effort to make CIBU an internationally recognized school of academic excellence is greatly appreciated by all.

Thank you to our CIBU staff and support teams for not only meeting the expectations of our faculty and students, but for all you do in exceeding those expectations. These are the standards that set CIBU above so many other schools within our category.

Thank you to current CIBU students, recent graduates, and alumni for exceeding all of the standards of excellence set by our accrediting body, Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS).

I am happy to share that we recently completed our student achievement report for our accrediting body and our students and proud that we have exceeded both the benchmark and compliance standards set by this esteemed body.
We are pleased to have our first group of Niels Brock students close to completing their Post-Secondary Business Vet Program and our Business Fundamentals and Skills students’ graduation is around the corner.

We all look forward to an even better winter quarter as CIBU welcomes new students from a variety of nations and cultures. Next year, 2014, promises to be a great year for us all.

Best wishes and Happy Thanksgiving,

Dr. Babb
