StartUp with San Diego’s most global and entrepreneurial university. CIBU offers an 8-week series for seasoned professionals and those transitioning careers. This engaging, practical, and hands-on experience is perfect for those looking to change careers or StartUp a new business.
Each segment is calculated to give you a piece of the puzzle in rebooting your professional life. Designed and instructed by working professionals/professors, experienced in a range of services, we take the aspiring entrepreneur through the steps necessary to build a new or expand an existing business.
The format is active, with interaction, team segments, individual development, and peer/mentor presentations. Participants should bring pen, paper as well as laptops and/or tablet. Expect to leave with a road-map carefully tailored to your own StartUp.
Weekly Sessions Include:
Week 1: Know Your Market – Assessing the Consumer Market & Competitive Marketplace – Trends, Opportunities & Challenges.
Brian Hawkins – Serial entrepreneur, founder of StyleSeek & PreFAB Space, Think Blue San Diego creator, he’s a professor of Entrepreneurship & Advertising at CIBU & UCSD.
Week 2: Develop Your Product or Service Concept – The Path to Prototyping, Testing, Sourcing & Crowd Sourcing, and Manufacture & Distribution.
JoAnn Jack – Experienced business consultant, seasoned expert in product design, sourcing & manufacturing, professor at Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising.
Week 3: Incorporate – Laws, Risks & Incorporation Associated with Starting Your Own Business.
Judge Eddie Sturgeon – Seated on the San Diego Superior Court since 1998, practicing law in his own firm since 1976, he is also a professor of law at CIBU.
Week 4: Raise Capital – Strategies for Fundraising & Development, Including Crowd Funding & Capital Sources, Access to Funding Sources from Donors to Angels.
Amber Brandner – Passionate advocate for start-ups, developer and manager of Start-Up Week San Diego, and she is founding partner in CrowdfundUP San Diego.
Week 5: Develop Your Brand & Voice – Public Relations, Press Relations, News Releases, Packaging & Selling Your Business to Media.
SaraLloyd Truax - From entrepreneur to lawyer, artist to award winning journalist, and professor to recruitment officer, she is a bit of all things communications.
Week 6: Package & Sell – Retailing & Merchandising, Conceptualization & Design, Color, Texture, Layout & Form, Product Mix, In-Store & Online Display.
Joy Sprink – Expert with more than 30 years experience in retailing and merchandising including department stores & specialty retail. Joy is a professor at FIDM San Diego.
Week 7: Reach Your Targets – Media & Messaging, Effective Media Selection, Communications, Traditional to New Media.
